Book Review: The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp

Rick Yancey's The Extraordinary Adventures of Alfred Kropp made my heart sink in the character's despair. From the title you know it's about Alfred Kropp but do you know the terrors he carries on his shoulders?

The theme is pretty obvious. About a boy who must pay for his sins and becomes a man out of it. But it is much more intense than just simple, coming of age. Alfred Kropp is the main character, as you may know. He is seen as a bumbling, giant idiot by his peers and the adults in his short life. But when his uncle needs his help, his decisions lead to the massacre of beloved sons and fathers. To him he can not do anything right. Bennacio, another major character, becomes a father figure to Alfred even though he is the reason all of his friends are dead. He helps the boy become a respectable man who does not ponder on his own faults. Another example of coming of age. Uncle Farrell is a minor character at the beginning. He is Alfred's uncle and caretaker. If it wasn't for him, Alfred would never have been in this horrible predicament. But his decisions led Alfred to become more than he ever thought.

I can not think of a book that reminds me of this one. As for current events, nothing rings a bell either.

The characters are sometimes very unbelievable. But I loved them either way! They made me hungry to gnaw at this book. Alfred, is the clumsy hero that stumbles his way to greatness. Bennacio is the mentor you always crave in a book. Dependable, strong, and a strong father figure to a lost teen. Who else would be so cool-headed when he has a poison tipped dagger to his throat and just stares the guy down?

This book was great but terribly depressing. It was so depressing I nearly wanted to just put it up and never look at it again.

Poem: Nightime and Morning

Whenever I go to bed,
After the sun has gone down,
Before the clock strikes midnight,
As I slip into my dreams,
I hope tomorrow will be as wonderful as today.

When I wake up,
As I rub my sleepy eyes,
Before the sun has risen,
While I long to slumber once more,
I know today has begun.

Book Review: The Invisible Man

H.G. Wells' The Invisible Man excited me. The title instantly gives the story away. It is about an invisible man. But what burdens does this man carry when his mental health begins to leave him?

The theme is hidden even if it seems obvious. Yes, it is about this invisible man. But what is the deep underlying theme to it, the meaning? Perhaps it's man lust for wanting to be known, to be noticed by society as a normal person. TIM, the invisible man for short, is the main character. He is seen as a gentleman and a scientist. He wears clothes so people think he is visible but gives the impression of a scarred, disfigured man since he wears bandages on his face and never removes his clothing. He wants people to know he's there. Mr. Marvel, a minor character toward the middle, is a sort of hermit and is very average. But it changes when TIM decides to use him for his own gain. Though Mr. Marvel wants people to know that this invisible man is holding him hostage, another wish to be noticed. Kemp, a professor, lives a boring, mundane life. Everything is always average until TIM begs him for help. Now he wants to be apart of a bigger picture.

A book that it reminds me of is, "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". Because both of these men are met with ill fortune by their experiments. As for current events, I can think of nothing. But it did get to me on a personal level. TIM just wishes to be normal and noticed.

I feel like I can believe in these characters, because they act the way I'd expect them to if they met an invisible man. But I did very much enjoy the characters. They made the story very enjoyable. TIM acts like a gentleman but if angered he gets very destructive and temperamental. Though he does it in a gentleman fashion with cool wit. Mr. Marvel is a sniveling coward who is terrified by TIM, but does as he says. But I like him because his cowardly humor is funny when TIM is around to make fun of it. Lastly, Kemp thinks he's crazy because he's helping TIM. So he argues with himself.

I have to say I loved this book. It's underlying was very funny, if caught. But it is for the older generations who understand Old English, so they may better enjoy it. Either way, this was a great read!

Argument: No Homework

Assertion/Claim (Topic Sentence)
  • We should not have homework.
Evidence (Concrete Details)
  • It is proven that, in some cases, homework has no impact on grades or test scores.
Commentary 1- Within my school, I know many students that hardly even do there homework and still make good grades. Why should they have that extra stress when they do not need it.

Commentary 2- To me, it is only an unnecessary practice meant for children that need it. If a student makes good grades they should have the option of no homework. But if the student struggles homework would be good for grasping the concept.

Evidence (Concrete Details)

  • That with no homework, children had a better attitude with school and were more willing to attend.

  • Commentary 1- With the extra time reserved from the lack of homework, a child could spend it having family time with parents and siblings. This would benefit the relationship between children and their parents.

Commentary 2- Lack of attendance has been often linked to children forgetting homework or an assignment that was due that day. But if they had no worries about this problem then they would be more willing to attend.

    Opposing Claims:
    • Some claim that without homework, children will start to fail their classes and lose their drive.
    • They argue that homework has been fundamental for teaching children for generations. Why change a good thing?
    My Rebuttal:
    • Though I concede that homework can be useful, I still insist it should only be used for children that need the extra help and practice.
    My Paragraph:

We should not have homework. It is proven that, in some cases, homework has no impact on grades or test scores. That with no homework, children had a better attitude with school and were more willing to attend. Also, parents reported that they had less conflict with their children without homework. Having no homework would help children learn more, because without the stress of homework they're minds would be more focused. Also, home life would improve because there would be no conflict over, "Have you done your homework?" Within my school, I know many students that hardly even do there homework and still make good grades. To me, it is only an unnecessary practice meant for children that need it. If a student makes good grades they should have the option of no homework. With the extra time reserved from the lack of homework, a child could spend it having family time with parents and siblings. This would benefit the relationship between children and their parents.
Some claim that without homework, children will start to fail their classes and lose their drive. They argue that homework has been fundamental for teaching children for generations. Why change a good thing? Though I concede that homework can be useful, I still insist it should only be used for children that need the extra help and practice.

My thinking: This paragraph is mainly deductive because I did it mostly from my own reasoning.

Book Review: Flags of Our Fathers

James Bradley's Flags Of Our Fathers made me understand. From the title and cover you can almost predict for certain that it's about a war. But it is much more than that. It's about boys becoming men, whether they want to or not.

The theme is not too difficult to decipher. This book taught me more than just men who gave up their lives to keep our freedom. But fathers, brothers, sons, husbands, and friends gave their lives. Rene Gagnon, a main character, was born to millfield workers. He had a family and siblings that loved him. But on his own choice he joined the war and risked everything. Jack Bradley had everything he ever wanted. But as the war started he chose the navy to help others with his medical abilities. Harlon Block was a star athlete with a way out of the war. He had no obligation to have to fight. But he chose to help the people of the country he loved.

I can not think of a book that connects to this book. But the book does relate to current events. As with this book, our we are at war with another country. Though men do not have to fight the war, they risk everything for us. But this book does not connect with me on a personal level.

As for the characters, I feel they are as real as possible because they are. Each man in this book were real people that fought for this country. I liked every character, though some more than others, making it very enjoyable to read. Mike Strank was an immigrant from the czech republic and had no obligations to fight this war. But he loved his adopted country so much, he sacrificed all he had to defend it. Frank Sously was not even old enough to go to war. But he fast talked his way into the ranks of the marines. Jack Bradley had finished all of his college education and was ready to start the business he always wanted but when war arrived. He was ready to battle for his country.

My recommendations are very high for this book! It was an excellent read and was bursting with imagery. Though I would suggest it as a teenager and up book. The imagery is gorey and not for the sensitive hearted. But men will be absorbed with this book. Even if they do not enjoy reading.

    Bullying Mentality

In this world we live in there are many types of bullying behaviors. It's just the job of identifying them when they show themselves. The easiest to identify is name calling. The bully may think he/she is not hurting the victim but it causes more pain than they know. Name calling can be hurtful even if the person means to be playful. Next is physical bullying. Physically touching someone to cause bodily harm is never right, even if the victim is bigger than the bully. This type of bullying also leads to emotional abuse. Lastly, we come to mental abuse. Telling someone that they are not worth anything or that no one loves them is mentally tearing the victim apart. They could start to believe that what they say is true, leading to depression. Bullying comes in every shape and form but it is never right.

    2010 Homecoming

Homecoming is always one of the most exciting events of the year for high school students. You have the dance, the game, the dates, and the crazy outfits. But unfortunately, the dance is not part of this list this year. Instead we are having a fall formal to replace it. I understand that they changed the date for the purpose of the students but pushing it back by two weeks seems a bit much. But I must say that it's nice to have a little more time to get prepared for such a nice night.

As for the game, I can't get too excited. The night of the game is my work night. While others are cheering their lungs off I'll be serving food and drinks to the giant crowd that is sure to flood Sonic on their way to the big game. Though I am excited to see so many excited people. It'll be fun either way.

Spirit week has not been as exciting as some of the others I've seen. But the people who do actually dress up do their best. One thing that kind of irked me was how messy day turned into pajama day and tropical day turned into inappropriate shorts length day. I guess you take the chance while you have it.

    1/4 Junior Year

When I first walked through the doors of Batesville High School for the first time of my junior year, I thought it'd be a breeze. I was almost a senior but still a child in the eyes of my peers and teachers. As for the easiness I was quite wrong. I should've listened when they said it was the hardest year of my highschool experience. Though it's been rather fun in the times it is not hard.

So far I've managed to keep my grades up. I have slipped down the slope of grading but I fought my way back up. My grades are in a comfortable position so my heart is at ease. Grades mean more than ever this year.

Recently, my mother had to go on a little bit of a business trip. She has a 2011 orange and black camaro but the back seats are not really meant for more than two people, unless you like cramped back seats. So she and her friends needed to borrow my car, which had very luxurious back seats. Think for a second on how we worked this out. Ding! Ding! Time's up! My mother allowed me to drive it to school so she could take my car. I was a thrilled teenage car lover. The most epic day of my whole year. I owe my mother a lot for that day.

As you can see my year has been a bit exciting with lots of worry weighing down on my mind and soul. Though I fought with grades, the year has been more than good, it's great!

    Book Review: Inkheart

Cornelia Funkes's Inkheart made me tremble with anticipation. The title is not very insightful of what the story is about until you read the whole thing. But if you think hard enough, a heart as black as ink. It could be a horror story for all you know.

At the beginning, I just sat the book down. I had looked it from front cover, back cover, and briefly leafed through. But I found nothing that interested. Finally, I forced myself to read it since it was a long read and would help my grade. I've now found the best book I have ever picked up in my life.

The setting was most likely somewhere in the late 1900's. It's difficult to figure out where the events are taking place but I would like to say somewhere in Europe, such as Italy or England. The events mostly take place in the country side, where the villains of the story lurk.

At first, the theme was difficult to find, like chasing someone around in a maze. But it showed me how evil some of our most beloved villains can be if they came into our on world. The characters made me a little scared at night.

The plot was more than invigorating. Meggie, the main character, lives with her father, Mo, in a comfortable little house. Mo is a bookbinder that is very good at his craft. Meggie is fifteen and when a mysterious stranger, Dustfinger, arrives to see her father, her world begins to cave in on it's self.

This book is so incredible that I would suggest it to anybody that can read. Meggie is an innocent girl with a love for reading. You'll love her the more you read. This book will make you sob, it'll make you giggle, and it will leave your mind invigorated.

    Four Paragraphs

                                                                         Persusasive

There are so many reasons why the people of the world should respect the environment. If we do not take care of it the ecosystem will quickly deteriorate. Without it we would have nothing to eat because the animals would nothing to eat. Hence, starving out the world. Is that the world we want to leave behind for our children and eventually our grandchildren? Well, in my opinion, I’d rather not. Also, if we are not careful, our pollution will completely deplete the ozone layer. If that was to happen. It would be so very easy to acquire skin cancer. Because the uv rays would have no filter to go through. Some people may not be convinced by what I’ve told you. But isn’t it better to be safe than sorry?
                                                              Expository

While at the UACCB Career Day I was pleasantly informed of the wonderous jobs out there. Thumping like drum, my heart raced at the possibilities. My first stop was at the physical therapy informational class. The teacher was very kind and answered our questions. Though most of the students did not really understand exactly what that field exactly does. I found it very fun but a little boring since she couldn’t exactly tell us everything. Because she was a last minute fill-in. She did very well though.
Wandering around aimlessly, I next went to the Arkansas Police class. At first, the teacher rather intimidated me. But as we got comfortable, he turned out to be a teddy bear. We watched a informational video but I had to leave during it to find my lost purse. Oopsies!!! Though I found it later because a UACCB helper had been kind enough to find it for me.
Although I lost my purse, I had an excellent time. It was kind of them to put the event together for us. The food was more than exemplary for was magnificent!

                                                           Descriptive

Antonia is an archetype of Mother Nature
Much like Mother Nature Antonia is very motherly. As Jim once said, she treated him more like a child than an equal. But also with her sister, Yulka, she watched her and never forgot to send nice things to her while she was working in town.
Also she can get very angry. Much like a volcano, many things could set her off, hurting others around her. Such as when Jim said Antonia’s mother wanted other people’s things. She also said hurtful things back.
As Mother Nature lets the cloud’s rain, Antonia is quite emotional. Though she has been hardened by the life she’s led, little things could make her cry. For example, when she and Jim went to the river. He noticed that she was crying.
There are so many reasons why Antonia reminds me of Mother Nature but they are most alike in their wildness and beauty.

    Book Review: Flirting with Disaster

Rhonda Stapleton's Flirting with Disaster warmed me. Even the title tells you that it's going to be a book about romantical mishaps. So you can tell it's either going to make you laugh, cry, or possibly both. But who knows, sometimes mishaps of love can help it flourish.

As soon as I picked up the book I wanted to read it. I'm a hopeless romantic at heart so everytime I see a comedic teen romance novel, I fall in love with it. Every one on Earth needs love, right?

The setting was very modern, possibly set in 2008. The main part of the setting is the school, which the main character attends and where all the drama starts. The main character, Felicity, goes to this school with her best friends, Andy and Maya, and her hearthrob, Derek.

The theme is distinguished in the first few chapters of the book. It was that even though you think your crush thinks nothing of you, you could be dead wrong. So never give up on someone with a fair chance.

The plot is also very easy to discover. Felicity goes to her school with her two best friends. But she learns that her job as a cupid is not easy at all when she matches one of her best friends with a new guy. Sending their friendship into turmoil. Felicity trys to mend their friendship as she secretly drools from afar at Derek.

I would recommend this book to almost all ages, except to ten years and below. Felicity is an average teen, except for the job as cupid part, that I think most, if not all girls, can relate to. Though I do not suggest it to
the male gender. They would probably hate the whole thing. But who knows.

    Book Review - Fever 1793

Laurie Halse Anderson's Fever 1793 chilled me. From the title you instantly know it's about an epidemic of sorts, Yellow Fever to be exact. So you assume that it'll be a tragedy filled with death and sorrow. But sometimes tragedy can turn into a tale of hope and love.

At first, I didn't even want to read the book. I'm not the sort to want to read a book that will make me lie face down on my bed and weep for an hour. Who wants to be filled with sorrow, huh?

The setting was quite unique for something I was reading, usually it's modern. But for once it was set in the beginning of our country:  United States of America. The story takes place in Philadelphia in the year of 1793. The main character, Matilda, lives in a coffeehouse with her mother, grandfather, and hired help.

The theme is not found until you're towards the middle of the book. The life lesson that as long as you keep hope and help the ones that need you. You'll get through the toughest of times.

Finding the plot is quite easy, in fact. The plot is about the main character and her families struggles as they go through the Philadelphia epidemic of Yellow Fever. As Matilda's mother falls ill with the disease, she is sent away to a family farm but tragedy follows her and her grandfather along the way.

My recommendations for this book is very high. Matilda is a strong-willed, hard-headed youth that you will adore through the story. This book is excellent from young adults all the way to senior citizen age. I would not suggest it to the younger generation though it is an excellent read.

    The Theme Behind Sentence Cruising

My reason for this blog's name is very simple. Since school started,I've been looking for a new car. Many times I was sure I was getting a specific car that happened to become sold or the owner wished not to sell it any longer. So, as you can tell, I was a very disappointed teenager. But fnally the day came when I found the perfect car, a PT Cruiser. Then I was a more than happy young adult. Which finally concludes the reason for my blog's name.

With this blog I hope to share my ideas and feelings with others. Making a good grade for English II is also a very good motivator. I want this blog to be a place where others can laugh along with me.

As for the design, I want it to be very creative. Something that when people go on to it their eyes have a dinner plate status and their minds think " Wow!!!". But also something I can enjoy when it comes time to type another blog.
